Liberia: President Boakai Lifts Suspension of NEC Chair, Calls for Unity and Cooperation

Monrovia – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., has lifted the suspension of Madam Davidetta Browne Lansanah as Chairperson of the National Elections Commission (NEC), with immediate effect.

The decision was made following a high-level meeting at the Executive Mansion on Wednesday, February 18, 2025. The meeting brought together members of the NEC Board of Commissioners, the ECOWAS Ambassador to Liberia, and senior officials of the Ministry of State for Presidential Affairs.

Chairperson Lansanah’s reinstatement follows extensive discussions among NEC Commissioners and senior presidential advisors, which resulted in an agreement to enhance cooperation within the Commission and reverse the recent dismissals of certain NEC employees.

In announcing his decision, President Boakai emphasized the need for unity and professionalism within the NEC. He urged the Commissioners to work collaboratively and ensure that internal conflicts do not undermine the Commission’s credibility.

“The NEC is a vital institution responsible for upholding democracy and public trust. It is imperative that its leadership and staff work together harmoniously to maintain transparency and integrity in our electoral processes,” President Boakai stated.

The President also pledged to meet with representatives of aggrieved NEC workers at a later date to address grievances outlined in a petition submitted to his office following a demonstration in December 2024. He encouraged NEC employees to continue supporting the Commission’s work while maintaining a peaceful and cooperative stance.

With this resolution, President Boakai expressed confidence that the uncertainty surrounding the NEC has been resolved, paving the way for the smooth conduct of the upcoming Nimba County by-election to fill the vacancy left by the passing of Senator Prince Y. Johnson.
