Liberia Pushes For Social Media Platforms’ Monetization

Accra, GHANA – Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) through Commissioner of Consumer, Public Affairs, and Universal Access, Patrick R. Honnah, has begun negotiations that would qualify Liberia for monetization rights on social media platforms worldwide.

Heading an LTA delegation recently at a four-day West Africa Telecommunications Regulators Assembly (WATRA) working groups’ meeting, in Accra, Ghana, Honnah initiated negotiations with Messrs. Edmund Yirenkyi Fianko, Director General of Ghana’s National Communications Authority (NCA) and Aliyu Yusuf Aboki, WATRA’s Executive Secretary, in a bid to chart a course through alternatives for Liberia to gain access to monetization on social media sites globally.

Content monetization or monetizing content for social media and website users to earn money is where user-generated contents are uploaded on social media platforms like Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok, where over the years these platforms have grown exponentially, such that it has become easier for anybody to turn their hobbies into professional careers by creating contents that other individuals want to read or view.

Facebook remains Africa’s most engaged social media platform, with 82 percent of its users being active on the site, a recent report said.

Liberia is not one of the African countries Facebook has listed as qualifying for monetization like Egypt, Nigeria, Ghana, Morocco, South Africa, and just recently, neighboring Sierra Leone.

With the recent move by the LTA to make Liberia eligible for social media platforms’ monetization, Liberian content creators have to meet some demands from these platforms.

For instance, to get paid on Facebook, content creators must among other conditions be 18 years and above, have a valid account, and adhere to Facebook’s content and engagement policies.

Assuming all goes well, Liberian content creators will also need 10k+ followers for badges and subscriptions, and for general content monetization, creators will need to focus on producing individual contents, adhering to the platform’s policies, and maintaining a large active base.
