Capitol Hill, Monrovia – The Plenary of the Liberian Senate has overwhelmingly confirmed Associate Justice Yamie Quiqui Gbeisay as the next Chief Justice of the Republic of Liberia.
By Obediah Johnson
Plenary, the Senate’s highest decision-making body, took the decision during its regular session on Thursday, July 17, following the submission of a report from its Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, Claims, and Petitions.
Justice Gbeisay was recently nominated by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai to succeed outgoing Chief Justice Sie-A-Nyene G. Youh, who has reached the mandatory retirement age as stipulated by the Liberian Constitution.
Article 72(b) of the 1986 Constitution provides:
“The Chief Justice and Associate Justices of the Supreme Court and judges of the subordinate courts of record shall be retired at the age of seventy; provided, however, that a Justice or Judge may continue in office for as long as may be necessary to enable him to render judgment or perform any other judicial duty in regard to proceedings entertained by him before he attained the age of seventy.”
The motion to confirm Justice Gbeisay was filed by Montserrado County Senator Abraham Darius Dillon. Out of the 24 Senators present during the session, all voted in favor of the confirmation.
