The ceremony, which took place in the Civil Law Court for Montserrado County, marked a significant milestone for the newly minted attorneys.
The graduates were welcomed into the legal profession by Judge George W. Smith, who emphasized the fundamental purpose of the legal profession during his remarks.
Judge Smith told the new attorneys that the legal profession is rooted in dispute resolution, based on the belief that truth will be revealed during courtroom trials. He further explained the distinction between two types of lawyers: “Giant-Seeker Lawyers” and “Truth-Seeker Lawyers.”
According to Judge Smith, “Giant-Seeker Lawyers” view litigation as a battlefield, where success depends on skill and intellect. In contrast, “Truth-Seeker Lawyers” focus on uncovering the truth of the issues being litigated, prioritizing justice over victory.
“While skill, sophistication, and intellectuality are essential tools of a good lawyer, these tools can sometimes be abused to overshadow the truth,” Judge Smith noted. He advised the newly admitted lawyers to focus on seeking truth in their legal practice.
Cllr. Bonar Varmah, President of the Liberia National Bar Association (LNBA), also offered words of encouragement.
He congratulated the new attorneys, acknowledging the hard work and dedication they put into achieving their goal.
Cllr. Varmah reminded the graduates that the law is not just a career, but a calling that demands integrity, professionalism, and a commitment to justice.
“The law is an instrument of justice, not a tool for personal gain,” Cllr. Varmah said. He urged the new attorneys to always maintain the highest ethical standards, treat clients and colleagues with respect, and persevere through the challenges that lie ahead.
The newly admitted attorneys include Lauren N. Sesay, Romeo G. Clarke, Jr., Cianna P. Smith, Theresa D. Bright, Frederick J. Barclay, Dennis E. Kronakumo, and Kulee C. Varfley.
