Liberia: VP Koung Faces Hostile Reception in the U.S.

The event was intended to foster dialogue on national development, governance, peace, and security. However, tensions quickly escalated as some attendees held placards and chanted anti-government slogans, accusing the Unity Party-led administration of failing to fulfill its campaign promises.

Monrovia – Vice President Jeremiah Koung has encountered an unfriendly reception during his visit to the United States, where he was met with protests from segments of the Liberian diaspora.

As part of his visit, VP Koung attended a town hall meeting organized by the Liberian Association of Pennsylvania (LAP) and the Union of Liberian Associations in the Americas (ULAA). The event was intended to foster dialogue on national development, governance, peace, and security. However, tensions quickly escalated as some attendees held placards and chanted anti-government slogans, accusing the Unity Party-led administration of failing to fulfill its campaign promises.

“You are a murderer!” one protester shouted.

“We need justice for the Kinjor massacre!” another added.

“We need justice for the killing of motorcyclists!” a third protester yelled.

The Vice President, visibly unsettled by the backlash, faced intense criticism as attendees voiced frustrations over allegations of human rights abuses, poor governance, and unkept promises. Eyewitnesses described an atmosphere of anger and disappointment, with protesters calling for justice and accountability.

As tensions mounted, it became clear that the discontent went beyond the specific grievances raised, reflecting broader dissatisfaction with the Boakai-Koung administration. The incident highlights a growing rift between the Liberian government and its citizens both at home and abroad, particularly on issues of justice, governance, and accountability.

Neither LAP, ULAA, nor the Vice President’s office has issued a statement regarding the incident.

VP Koung’s trip to the U.S. marks his first official visit and includes participation in the 10th Powering Africa Summit, held from March 6-7. The summit serves as a premier platform for advancing U.S.-Africa energy partnerships.
