Liberia: VP Koung Turns to PYJ’s Spirit to Sway Nimba Voters ahead of By-election

Karnplay – Vice President Jeremiah Koung Saturday openly offered prayers to the late Senator Prince Yormie Johnson, asking for spiritual guidance as Nimbaians prepare to vote in Tuesday’s senatorial election.

Seven candidates are vying to replace the late Johnson, who died November 28 2024. Vice President Koung, a protege of the late Johnson, is supporting Samuel Kogar, the candidate of the Movement for Democracy and Reconstruction (MDR), the late Johnson’s political party.

Speaking to a large crowd in Gbeh-la-Gbeh Administrative District, VP Koung paused his address to say a prayer to the late political strongman, invoking his name and spirit to guide the voting process and ensure victory for Kogar.

“Let me speak to my father, the late Prince Yormie Johnson, to show us the way as we go to the polls,” Koung said. “This election is for Kogar. Not a single vote should go to any other candidate.”

He described the district as the “electoral college of Nimba County” and called on residents to deliver a landslide win for Kogar. Koung further declared that Johnson would not rest spiritually until the elections are over, and hinted at his own political ambitions, saying, “PYJ will not sleep until 2029.”

The vice president also urged Nimbaians to maintain unity and reject the use of money or violence by outside actors to divide the county.

However, the event drew criticism after it was observed that health workers from Karnplay Health Facility reportedly abandoned their duties to attend the rally, and the town’s only hospital ambulance was allegedly used to transport supporters to the campaign ground.
