Monrovia-In a major step toward improving urban mobility and easing transportation challenges across the country, the Government of Liberia has unveiled plans to revamp the national public transportation system through the procurement of 55 new buses and 5 control trucks.
The announcement was made Tuesday by Information Minister Jerolinmek Matthew Piah as part of the Boakai administration’s broader strategy to modernize Liberia’s aging transportation infrastructure.
“This is a clear demonstration of the government’s commitment to making public transportation more efficient, reliable, and accessible to all Liberians,” Minister Piah stated.
According to Minister Piah, the contract for the new fleet has already been approved by the Public Procurement and Concessions Commission (PPCC), and final steps are underway to complete the procurement process. The vehicles will be managed by the National Transit Authority (NTA), which has been without a functioning administrative hub since a 2022 arson attack destroyed its headquarters.
Minister Piah also disclosed that a contract for the construction of a new NTA administrative building has been signed, signaling a fresh start for the agency. “This marks the beginning of a new era for public transport in our country. We are not just replacing buses; we are rebuilding a system,” he added.
