(Monrovia, Liberia – February 20, 2025)_ Several Liberians have expressed appreciation for the work of Dr. Emmanuel Urey Yarkpawolo, the Executive Director of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as he marks one year in office.
During his appearance on the Bumper Show on ELBC Radio on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, callers phoned in to commend Dr. Yarkpawolo for the improvements he has made at the EPA since taking over in February 2024. Many praised his leadership, commitment to environmental protection, and efforts in strengthening the agency.
Callers also lauded President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for appointing Dr. Yarkpawolo, emphasizing that the president made the right choice. “The president did not make any mistake by appointing Dr. Yarkpawolo,” one caller stated, noting that the EPA has significantly improved under his administration.
Since assuming office, Dr. Yarkpawolo and his team have brought several positive changes to the EPA. His administration has focused on key areas such as holding companies accountable for environmental compliance, improving employee welfare, and ensuring Liberia sign onto important international environmental conventions.
One of the major achievements of his leadership has been the enforcement of environmental regulations. Under his watch, several companies operating in Liberia have been required to adhere strictly to environmental laws. This has led to better waste management practices and reduced pollution in many areas.
Dr. Yarkpawolo has also placed a strong emphasis on improving the working conditions of EPA employees. Reports indicate that staff welfare has seen significant improvements, with better transportation services, improved working environments, and transparency, among others.
In addition, Liberia has signed onto several global environmental agreements during Dr. Yarkpawolo’s tenure. These agreements aim to strengthen the country’s commitment to tackling climate change, protecting biodiversity, and promoting sustainable development.
During the Bumper Show interview, Dr. Yarkpawolo acknowledged the challenges faced by the EPA but assured the public that more improvements were underway.
He highlighted the need for stronger policies to combat construction on wetlands, deforestation, and pollution. He also emphasized the importance of public awareness campaigns to educate Liberians on environmental issues.
“We are making significant progress, but there is still more to be done,” Dr. Yarkpawolo stated. “We will continue to enforce environmental laws, ensure companies comply with regulations, and protect Liberia’s natural resources for future generations.”
