MONROVIA – Two Liberians have secured senior positions within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) after the regional bloc’s Authority of Heads of State and Government endorsed Mrs. Charlyne M. Brumskine as a Judge of the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice and Hon. Dehpue Yenpea Zuo as Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture of the ECOWAS Commission.
The endorsements, covering the 2026–2030 term, represent a significant milestone for Liberia’s representation within one of West Africa’s most influential regional institutions.
Mrs. Brumskine was endorsed as one of five judges of the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice for the four-year term. She joins other judicial appointees from across the region, including Hon. Awa Bah of The Gambia, Mr. Desire Henri Aihou of Benin, Mrs. Henrietta Uzoamaka Didigu of Nigeria, and Dr. Yaouza Ouro-Sama of Togo.
The ECOWAS Court of Justice is responsible for interpreting and applying the legal framework of the regional bloc and addressing disputes relating to ECOWAS treaties, protocols, and community obligations.
Brumskine’s selection places her among regional legal experts tasked with contributing to justice, institutional accountability, and the rule of law within the ECOWAS community.
She is the daughter of the late Liberian politician Charles Walker Brumskine, a former presidential candidate and founder of the Liberia National Bar Association who remained a prominent figure in Liberian politics until his death.
Meanwhile, Hon. Dehpue Yenpea Zuo, Liberia’s Deputy Minister of Finance for Economic Management, has been endorsed as ECOWAS Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture, effective September 1, 2026.
Zuo’s endorsement followed the Authority’s adoption of recommendations from the 96th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers regarding statutory appointments for the 2026–2030 period.
The Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Agriculture portfolio is one of the key positions within the ECOWAS Commission, focusing on regional economic integration, agricultural development, economic policy coordination, and cooperation among member states.
Before his selection, Zuo was among Liberian candidates considered for the position. Reports indicated that Ambulai Miamey was also among the candidates who applied for the post before Zuo was endorsed by the ECOWAS Authority.
The selection of two Liberians for senior ECOWAS positions highlights Liberia’s growing participation in regional decision-making and comes at a time when the country continues efforts to strengthen its diplomatic and institutional influence within West Africa.
The appointments are expected to provide Liberia with increased representation in critical areas of regional governance, including economic development, agriculture, legal affairs, and regional integration.
While the Government of Liberia has not yet released a detailed statement on the endorsements, the selections mark a notable achievement for Liberian professionals at the regional level and reinforce Liberia’s role within the ECOWAS community.
