Lnba Urges Peaceful, Lawful Participation In Nimba County By-election

MONROVIA – The Liberian National Bar Association (LNBA) has called on all citizens of Nimba County to fully and peacefully participate in today’s senatorial by-election, urging eligible voters to uphold the Constitution and laws of Liberia while exercising their democratic rights.

In a press statement issued Monday, April 21, 2025, the LNBA, through its National President Cllr. Bornor M. Varmah, underscored the critical importance of responsible civic engagement as Liberia seeks to strengthen its democratic institutions. The Association emphasized that the electoral process must be free from intimidation, incitement, or violence, warning that any disruption to the process would constitute a threat to national stability.

“The Liberian National Bar Association strongly cautions all anti-democratic elements, whether acting directly or indirectly, to refrain from interfering with the ongoing democratic process in Nimba County,” the statement declared. “The people of Nimba must be allowed to freely exercise their democratic and civic responsibilities without the infusion of conflict, intimidation, or coercion.”

The LNBA commended the National Elections Commission (NEC) for its sustained efforts in maintaining the integrity of Liberia’s electoral system and expressed appreciation to both local and international partners for supporting free, fair, and credible elections in the country.

However, the Bar expressed concern over persistent challenges within the electoral environment. Among these are limited civic and voter education in remote areas of Nimba, logistical and administrative hurdles that could dampen public trust, and potential security threats that may arise due to heightened political tensions.

The LNBA called on political parties, independent candidates, and their supporters to conduct themselves with civility, respect for democratic norms, and adherence to the rule of law. The Association urged security agencies, civil society organizations, and the NEC to work collaboratively to ensure that the by-election is conducted smoothly and that all legal complaints are addressed through proper channels.

Reaffirming its commitment to democratic governance and the rule of law, the LNBA warned that it would recommend sanctions, both domestic and international, against any individuals or groups found to be undermining the electoral process or promoting instability.

“As the Bar continues to closely monitor developments in Nimba County, we urge all political actors, community leaders, and citizens to uphold peace, respect the rights of voters, and maintain confidence in Liberia’s democratic process,” the statement concluded.
