Lprc Announces Arrival Of First Fuel Shipment In 40 Years, Opens Door To Importers

MONROVIA – The Liberia Petroleum Refining Company (LPRC) has officially announced the arrival of its first major consignment of petroleum products in more than four decades. The company disclosed on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, in a notice signed by Deputy Managing Director for Operations Eric Ceekay Sayee and approved by Managing Director Amos Tweh, that the initial shipment of 3.5 million gallons of gasoline has landed, with an additional 17,000 metric tons expected soon.

The notice, titled “Notice of Arrival of LPRC’s Petroleum Consignment,” was addressed to all importers and reaffirmed LPRC’s commitment to refraining from distributing or retailing petroleum products. Instead, the company will rely on qualified importers to serve as Off Takers. LPRC invited all interested and qualified importers to contact its Marketing and Legal Departments to conclude the necessary processes for acquiring and selling the newly arrived fuel.

Importers must meet specific criteria to qualify as Off Takers. These include holding a valid import license from LPRC, having no outstanding financial liabilities with the company, operating retail outlets or filling stations throughout Liberia, and being fully registered and tax compliant with the Government of Liberia.

As part of broader efforts to improve energy access and reduce reliance on middlemen, President Joseph Boakai is expected to officially inaugurate the Direct Fuel Import initiative, aimed at making fuel more available and affordable for all Liberians. In addition to the inauguration, the President is scheduled to inspect ongoing infrastructure development projects at the LPRC facility, including the construction of new storage tanks and the establishment of advanced petroleum testing laboratories.

LPRC urged importers to act swiftly in expressing their interest and completing required documentation. The deadline for submitting expressions of interest is Friday, August 1, 2025, at 4:00 P.M. The company emphasized that all existing LPRC regulations governing the handling of petroleum products remain fully in effect.

The announcement is being viewed as a major step forward in revitalizing Liberia’s petroleum supply chain, with officials hopeful it will lead to greater stability in fuel availability and prices across the country.
