LTA, Others Host Liberia’s Maiden DigiTech Expo to Showcase Digital Future | News

The Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, has successfully hosted the first-ever DigiTech Expo, under the theme “Showcasing Liberia’s Digital Future.”

Held at the Ministerial Complex in Congo Town, the one-day event brought together government officials, innovators, tech entrepreneurs, and international partners to celebrate innovation, digital inclusion, and technological transformation in Liberia.

Delivering the keynote address on behalf of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Post and Telecommunications Minister Ansu Konneh described the event as a major step in advancing the administration’s digital development agenda.

“Technology is not a luxury — it’s a national necessity,” Minister Konneh stressed. “From national verification systems to healthcare portals and real-time job data, we are using digital tools to promote transparency, efficiency, and inclusion.”

Minister Konneh also announced that Liberia’s Technology Summit will take place from July 21 to 22, 2025, at the same venue, promising an even larger platform to showcase the country’s tech advancements.

One of the expo’s biggest highlights was the AI Challenge Liberia, a competitive platform for emerging tech innovators. Among the six finalists, Dahtor clinched the grand prize of US$10,000. ResQnet secured second place with $5,000. Safe Drive Liberia placed third, earning $3,000. In a show of support for all participants, the LTA awarded the remaining three finalists $1,000 each, recognizing their creativity and promising solutions.

Speaking at the event, Acting LTA Commissioner Abdullah L. Kamara emphasized the transformative power of digital infrastructure in sectors like healthcare and agriculture.

“We are building a digital ecosystem where even small operators can thrive,” Kamara said. “Through partnerships with telecom giants like ZTE, LTC, and Orange, we’re creating new opportunities across the country.”

The expo drew bipartisan support from the National Legislature. Representative Iva K. Jones of Margibi and Senator Francis Saidy Dopoh II of River Gee commended the initiative and called for increased efforts to expand ICT access to underserved areas.

“From Bong to River Cess, there are still communities without basic network access,” Rep. Jones said. “We must bridge this gap. We are no longer just consumers of technology—we are becoming producers.”

Further advancing the digital inclusion agenda, the National Insurance Corporation of Liberia (NICOL) unveiled a groundbreaking partnership with the National Identification Registry (NIR) and the LTA to roll out a pilot digital health insurance program.

The initiative aims to provide coverage for 3,000 to 5,000 vulnerable citizens in Montserrado and Bomi counties using biometric and mobile platforms.

“This collaboration shows our commitment to using innovation to strengthen Liberia’s social protection systems,” said NICOL Acting CEO Abdullah Swaray. “It improves accountability, reduces fraud, and enhances service delivery.”

The expo also honored Nollywood actor and brand ambassador Eddie Watson, a Liberian-born advocate for digital transformation in Africa, for his role in promoting ICT advancement and civic engagement through tech.

As Liberia continues its march toward digital maturity, the success of the first DigiTech Expo signals a strong commitment to transforming the nation’s economy and governance through technology.

With the announcement of the 2025 Technology Summit, policymakers and private sector leaders are already gearing up for the next leap forward in building a digitally empowered Liberia.
