Man Indicted For Deadly Violence During 2023 Unity Party Victory Celebration In Monrovia

MONROVIA – Lawrence K. Williams has been formally indicted by the First Judicial Circuit Criminal Court “A” for Montserrado County in connection with a deadly outbreak of violence during the Unity Party’s victory celebration following the 2023 Run-off Presidential Election.

Court documents indicate that Williams faces multiple charges, including Murder, Aggravated Assault, and Criminal Attempt to Commit Murder. The indictment, signed by Judge Roosevelt Z. Willie, details that the accused allegedly “purposely, knowingly, willfully, and critically inflicted bodily wounds” during the festivities at the Unity Party headquarters on Broad Street on November 20, 2023. The violent outbreak resulted in the deaths of Peter Gray, Mariama Kromah, and Varney Suleiman, while 29 other individuals sustained serious injuries.

Williams was arrested by the Liberia National Police, informed of his constitutional rights, and subjected to a formal investigation. Prosecutors described the actions of Williams as deliberate and reckless, highlighting a blatant disregard for human life during what was meant to be a moment of national celebration.

If found guilty, Williams could face life imprisonment or other penalties under Liberian law. The trial, titled Republic of Liberia by and thru the Ministry of Justice versus Lawrence K. Williams, is scheduled to commence on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at 10:00 AM before Criminal Court “B.”

The indictment marks a critical moment in Liberia’s ongoing efforts to ensure accountability and uphold the rule of law in response to politically related violence, sending a clear message regarding the consequences of criminal actions during public celebrations.
