Conakry, Republic of Guinea — His Excellency Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr., President of the Republic of Liberia, alongside His Excellency Mamadi Doumbouya of the Republic of Guinea and His Excellency Julius Maada Bio of the Republic of Sierra Leone, have successfully concluded high-level consultations aimed at securing regional stability. The three leaders met in Conakry to address ongoing border tensions, ultimately agreeing to pursue a strictly peaceful and diplomatic path toward resolution.
The meeting was held within the framework of the Mano River Union (MRU) and conducted in an atmosphere described as both cordial and frank. By the conclusion of the session on Monday evening, the heads of state adopted a joint communiqué that prioritizes dialogue over the use of force. A central component of this agreement is the decision to maintain the status quo ante regarding current border positions while negotiations continue, ensuring that the vital trade, commerce, and cultural ties among border communities remain undisturbed.
The Presidents emphasized that collective action is essential to preserve stability and deepen the spirit of good neighborliness. Their deliberations were specifically informed by recent incidents that had heightened tensions in certain border areas, necessitating a unified response to safeguard the region.
At the conclusion of the Summit, the Heads of State established several key positions to guide their future cooperation. They expressed shared concern over the impact of global crises on developing nations and reaffirmed that sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence must remain the guiding principles of their relations. The leaders committed to resolving all border issues through peaceful diplomatic means, citing consistency with Article 33 of the United Nations Charter.
To ensure long-term security, the three nations pledged to strengthen joint efforts against terrorism, transnational organized crime, and trafficking. They also agreed to transform border areas into hubs of prosperity by promoting joint economic activities, infrastructure development, and the free movement of people and goods.
Furthermore, the leaders directed their respective defense and security institutions to intensify collaboration through joint patrols, intelligence sharing, and improved communication mechanisms. Relevant agencies have been tasked with urgently engaging in community-level dialogue to manage incidents and advance the technical work of border demarcation with the support of international partners.
In a move to revitalize regional governance, the Presidents resolved to convene an MRU Summit within one month to enhance regular dialogue on peace and development. They also signaled their intention to undertake reciprocal working visits to further cement the fraternity among their nations. The outcome of these consultations in Conakry is expected to significantly ease regional tensions, restore public confidence, and facilitate the growth of cross-border economic activities. Following the successful conclusion of the meeting, President Boakai and President Bio have returned to their respective capitals.
