National Archives And We-care Foundation To Celebrate Monday, September 8, 2025, As International Literacy Day

Monrovia, Liberia – The Center for National Documents and Records Agency (CNDRA), We-Care Foundation, Consortium of Adult Education of Liberia, and the Liberia Association of Writers, in collaboration with Book Aid International, are set to join the global celebration of International Literacy Day on Monday, September 8, 2025.

This year’s celebration in Monrovia will be held under the international theme, “Promoting Literacy in a Digital Era,” at the Clar Marie Weah Events Hall at the CNDRA’s central office on 12th Street, Sinkor. The event will focus on adapting literacy education to the demands of today’s digital world, emphasizing the ability to not only read and write but also to access, understand, and safely engage with digital content.

International Literacy Day, established by UNESCO in 1966, highlights literacy as a fundamental human right and a catalyst for development. According to an official release from the National Archives, the 2025 program will critically assess current literacy practices within the digital context and measure global progress.

D. Nelson Bearngar, Director General of the National Archives, stated that the agency is committed to advocating for effective policies and interventions that view literacy as both a common good and a fundamental human right. He emphasized that empowering citizens through literacy is key to building inclusive and sustainable societies.

“The celebration will serve as a platform to reflect on the true meaning of literacy in today’s world,” DG Bearngar said. “It is about more than reading and writing but about empowerment, economic advancement, and social progress in a digital age.”

The event is expected to bring together a wide range of stakeholders, including high school students, school principals, members of the National Teachers Association of Liberia, officials from the Monrovia Consolidated School System, and both local and international partners.
