MONROVIA – The National Identification Registry (NIR) has strongly condemned a violent attack on its Executive Director, Hon. Andrew Peters, and other senior staff members by a group claiming affiliation with the National Youth Congress of the Unity Party (UP). The incident occurred at the NIR head office on Monday, September 1, 2025, at approximately 7:25 a.m., according to a press release signed by Peters on Tuesday, September 2.
The Executive Director was in his office alongside the newly appointed Deputy Executive Director for Administration, Mr. Sylvester Nyumah, when the group forcibly entered and violently assaulted them. During the attack, the assailants reportedly seized two cell phones, a laptop, and other personal belongings from Peters.
Other victims of the assault include Communications Director Mr. Daniel Sloh Sargbe, Director for Operations Mr. Thierry Nagbo, Dispatcher Mr. Abraham Quehn, and Maintenance Officer Mr. Melvin Cole. The perpetrators took phones belonging to Abraham and Melvin, while Thierry’s laptop, phone, and cash were also stolen. In addition, the main door leading to the Executive Director’s office was damaged during the attack.
The NIR lauded officers of the Liberia National Police (LNP) for their swift response, which resulted in the apprehension of five individuals suspected to be involved in the assault.
In its statement, the NIR urged the Liberia National Police to conduct a thorough and impartial investigation to identify all perpetrators, recover the stolen items, and bring both the attackers and any sponsors to justice. “Liberia is a country of law and not men,” the release stated.
The Registry also called on its staff to remain calm and continue performing their duties diligently while the investigation is ongoing, emphasizing the importance of serving the public despite the shocking incident.
Executive Director Peters described the attack as “barbaric and unacceptable,” asserting that such actions undermine the integrity of public institutions and the safety of government officials. He reiterated the NIR’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and providing essential services to Liberians without fear or intimidation.
Authorities confirmed that the arrested suspects are being held for questioning and that a full investigation is underway. The NIR stressed the need for speedy action to restore public confidence and ensure accountability for the incident.
The press release further highlighted that attacks on public servants are not only criminal acts but also threats to national governance, urging all citizens to respect state institutions and the rule of law.
The incident has sparked concern across government offices, with many urging strict enforcement of security measures to protect public officials and maintain order in government institutions.
Meanwhile, NIR employees have expressed solidarity with the Executive Director and staff, vowing to continue their work despite the intimidation. The Agency reaffirmed its dedication to serving the Liberian public efficiently and transparently.
As the investigation continues, the National Identification Registry called on the Liberian public to support law enforcement efforts and to remain vigilant against any attempts to disrupt the functioning of public institutions.
The Registry concluded by emphasizing that such violent acts will not deter its mission to strengthen Liberia’s identification systems and deliver essential services to citizens nationwide.
