MONROVIA, November 2, 2026: The Governments of Liberia and the People’s Republic of China have signed a RMB 200 million (approximately US$30 million) development grant agreement following Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti’s official visit to Beijing in May 2026.
The agreement, signed on October 27 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Monrovia, follows high-level discussions between Minister Nyanti and her Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and mobilizing support for Liberia’s development priorities.
According to a Foreign Ministry press release, the grant will support development projects jointly identified by the two governments, consistent with President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Minister Nyanti thanked Chinese President Xi Jinping, Foreign Minister Wang Yi, and the Chinese Government for fulfilling commitments made during her visit to Beijing.
“It is a very clear example of real action after bilateral dialogue,” Nyanti said, describing the agreement as a demonstration of results-oriented diplomacy.
She reaffirmed Liberia’s commitment to the One China policy and called for stronger economic cooperation, increased Chinese investment, expanded trade and greater employment opportunities for Liberian youth.
Minister Nyanti also sought China’s continued support as Liberia prepares to assume the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council in December 2026.
She extended an invitation to Foreign Minister Wang Yi to attend a high-level debate on maritime security scheduled for December 3 in New York, which President Boakai is expected to chair.
For his part, Chinese Ambassador to Liberia Yin Chengwu welcomed the agreement, describing it as another demonstration of China’s commitment to supporting Liberia’s development.
Ambassador Yin disclosed that more than eight Chinese-supported projects are currently underway across Liberia, adding that the new grant would finance additional projects to be jointly determined by the two governments.
He reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to expanding cooperation with Liberia through bilateral engagements and multilateral institutions, including the United Nations.
The agreement follows Minister Nyanti’s May 2026 visit to Beijing, during which both countries discussed strengthening diplomatic and economic relations and expanding development cooperation.
