MONROVIA, October 1, 2026 — Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) National Chairman Janga Augustus Kowo says opposition political parties have not reached any agreement on a possible 2029 electoral alliance, merger, or presidential standard-bearer, stressing that current discussions focus on national issues affecting Liberians.
Speaking on Voice of Liberia, Kowo said the five opposition parties involved in the latest political engagement are seeking to build cooperation around national issues and government accountability before considering any electoral arrangement.
He said concerns affecting Liberians should form the foundation of the parties’ engagement, arguing that previous opposition collaborations encountered difficulties partly because political actors moved too quickly toward electoral alliances.
“The issues that confront the Liberian people are the things that bring them together,” Kowo said.
Asked whether the CDC would support an arrangement in which the opposition standard-bearership remains open, Kowo said such a discussion is premature.
“It’s premature. And it’s a non-starter for an honest conversation,” he said.
Kowo said the current framework remains open to other opposition parties and political actors, with consultations continuing.
He also addressed concerns raised by Citizens Movement for Change (CMC) Political Leader Musa Hassan Bility, saying Bility’s dissenting position is respected and that the broader engagement remains open to him and others.
The CMC recently declined to endorse the draft communiqué associated with the opposition cooperation process, saying the proposed arrangement did not reflect the party’s objectives.
Kowo said the immediate objective is to establish common ground on national issues before considering any future coalition, merger or electoral alliance.
According to him, the participating parties are currently focused on cooperating on issues of national concern and holding the government accountable rather than deciding who would head a presidential ticket in 2029.
