Oxygen Tank Explosion At Mira Gas Company Injures Workers In Freeport Community

MONROVIA – An explosion at the MIRA Gas Company near CEMENCO in the Freeport Community on Monday, September 15, 2025, left several employees injured and sent shockwaves through the surrounding area.

The incident occurred around 3 p.m. when an oxygen tank reportedly exploded, forcing employees and nearby residents into panic. Though no lives were lost, multiple workers sustained injuries.

Edwin Tisdell, Deputy Director of Operations at the Liberia National Fire Service, confirmed that seven people were wounded and taken to the John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital for treatment. He assured the public that, despite the severity of the blast, all the victims were alive and receiving medical care.

However, an employee of MIRA Gas who witnessed the incident claimed that at least 16 workers were initially rushed to Mawah Clinic in Vai Town before being transferred to JFK Hospital. The conflicting reports on the number of victims have raised questions about the scale of the injuries and the immediate response from emergency services.

Eyewitnesses described the blast as catastrophic, sending debris across the vicinity and drawing large crowds to the scene. Emergency personnel from the Liberia National Fire Service and other agencies quickly responded to contain the situation and evacuate the injured.

As of now, the exact cause of the explosion remains unknown, and no official statement has been released by the company. Authorities have begun investigations to determine what triggered the blast and to assess the level of damage sustained by the facility.

The MIRA Gas explosion has left families of the victims and residents of the Freeport Community anxious as they await further updates on the investigation and the condition of those hospitalized.
