PHIL Elated over Timely Gavi Co-Financing Payment | News

Public Health Initiative Liberia (PHIL) has lauded the government for meeting its Gavi co-financing obligations on time for 2025. In July 2025, the Government made a 100% payment of US$551,000 and additionally contributed US$200,000 toward its 2026 co-financing obligations.

This milestone, PHIL noted in a statement on Monday, August 18, represents a significant achievement, as in previous years Liberia faced difficulties in making timely payments, leading to delays in vaccine procurement and threatening the steady delivery of life-saving immunization services.

By fulfilling and advancing its obligations this year, the public health organization noted, the government has demonstrated fiscal responsibility, political will, and commitment to safeguarding the health of Liberian children.

“This timely payment sends a strong signal that the Government of Liberia is serious about protecting its citizens especially children from vaccine-preventable diseases,” said Joyce L. Kilikpo PHIL Executive Director. “This achievement also aligns strongly with one of PHIL’s key objectives under the Liberia Immunization and Primary Health Care Financing Advocacy Project, financed by Gavi through the Global Health Advocacy Incubator. Our work has focused on supporting Liberia to strengthen accountability and mobilize sustainable financing for immunization.”

Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, requires eligible countries like Liberia to share the cost of vaccines through an annual co-financing commitment. This arrangement is designed to promote country ownership, sustainability, and financial responsibility in immunization programs. Liberia has historically faced challenges in meeting these obligations on time, which placed vaccine availability at risk. However, the 2025 payment not only met the full obligation but also advanced part of the 2026 requirement marking a positive shift in Liberia’s commitment to immunization financing.

Liberia’s prompt action this year strengthens the sustainability of the Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) and enhances partner confidence in the country’s ability to prioritize and manage domestic health financing.

PHIL calls on the Government, development partners, and communities to build on this momentum, ensuring that timely and predictable financing continues to protect every Liberian child from vaccine-preventable diseases.
