President Boakai Cuts Flour And Rice Prices To Make Food Affordable For Liberian Families

MONROVIA — President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has announced significant reductions in the prices of flour and rice, a move aimed at easing the financial burden on ordinary Liberians and stabilizing the local market. The announcement follows recommendations from the Presidential Ad-Hoc Committee on Price Contradictions, chaired by Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung.

According to an Executive Mansion press release issued on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, and signed by Presidential Press Secretary Atty. Kula Bonah Nyei Fofana, the wholesale price of flour, previously set at US$39.00 per 100-pound bag, has been reduced to US$35.00 per 100-pound bag. Similarly, the price of rice, formerly US$16.75 per 25-kilogram bag, has been lowered to US$14.00 per 25-kilogram bag.

“These reductions represent my government’s commitment to ensuring that the ordinary Liberian family has access to affordable food,” President Boakai said. “At the same time, we are working with producers and importers to maintain fair and sustainable trade practices that safeguard continuous supply.”

The President has further instructed the Ministry of Commerce inspectorates and all relevant stakeholders to enforce the new prices nationwide. He warned that any individual or business found artificially inflating prices would face the full weight of the law.

While the new prices take effect immediately, the Presidential Committee will continue consultations with stakeholders to review cost drivers and explore opportunities for additional reductions. President Boakai emphasized that stabilizing prices, strengthening food security, and reducing household expenses remain top priorities of his administration.

In a related development, Commerce Minister Magdalene Dagoseh confirmed that a nationwide inspection of markets, shops, and suppliers would commence immediately to ensure strict compliance with the new pricing guidelines. “Our goal is simple: to protect consumers from unfair pricing and make basic goods affordable for every household,” Minister Dagoseh said. “Anyone found overcharging will face serious consequences. Together, we can create a fair and transparent market that works for all Liberians. I ask for your support and cooperation during this important process.”
