President Boakai Departs Liberia For UN Assembly And First Liberia Diaspora Conference

MONROVIA – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai on Monday, September 8, 2025, departed Liberia for the United States to attend the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York and to convene the first-ever Liberia National Diaspora Conference.

According to the Office of the Press Secretary, President Boakai will join world leaders, Heads of State and Government, and global partners at the UNGA to deliberate on urgent international issues, including peace and security, climate change, sustainable development, and global cooperation.

While in the United States, the President will host the Liberia National Diaspora Conference, aimed at deepening engagement between Liberia and its diaspora community. The conference will focus on promoting investment opportunities and mobilizing diaspora support for national development priorities.

The Liberian leader is accompanied by a high-level delegation that includes senior government officials and legislators. Among those attending specialized meetings and side events are Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti, Finance Minister Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, Education Minister Jarso Maley Jallah, Environmental Protection Agency Executive Director Dr. Emmanuel K. Urey Yarkpawolo, Health Minister Dr. Louise M. Kpoto, and Youth and Sports Minister Cllr. Jerod Cole Bangalu.

The delegation is expected to participate in thematic discussions and bilateral meetings covering issues such as the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, climate change, and other international partnerships.

President Boakai stressed that Liberia’s participation in the UNGA underscores its commitment to multilateralism and reflects the country’s determination to play an active role in addressing global challenges. He added that the Diaspora Conference reaffirms the vital role Liberians abroad continue to play in the nation’s growth and progress.

During his stay, President Boakai will deliver an address to the Plenary of the UN General Assembly and hold bilateral meetings with international partners, development agencies, and business leaders. These engagements will focus on strengthening partnerships, attracting investment, and advancing Liberia’s development agenda.

In his absence, the Minister of Justice, Cllr. Oswald N. Tweh, will coordinate the affairs of the Cabinet as Acting Chairman in consultation with Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung and the President.

President Boakai and his delegation are expected to return to Liberia at the close of the month following the conclusion of their engagements, including the Diaspora Conference in Washington, D.C.
