MONROVIA, LIBERIA – President Joseph Nyuma Boakai has expressed profound sorrow over the death of His Holiness Pope Francis, who passed away in the early hours of Easter Monday, April 21, 2025. In an official statement, President Boakai extended heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Government and people of Liberia to the Catholic Church, the Holy See, and the global Catholic community.
Describing Pope Francis as a beacon of humility, compassion, and tireless advocacy for the marginalized, President Boakai hailed the late pontiff’s legacy of peace, social justice, environmental protection, and interfaith dialogue. He emphasized that Pope Francis’s leadership transcended religious boundaries and provided moral guidance to a world facing increasing division and hardship.
President Boakai recalled with reverence his recent audience with the Pope on October 18, 2024, at the Vatican Apostolic Palace. He said their discussions touched on pressing global challenges, including migration and social equity, and reflected the Pope’s deep understanding of the struggles facing humanity.
