Washington, D.C., September 18, 2026 — President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Sr. met Thursday, September 17, 2026, with representatives of the Friends of Providence Island to discuss an initiative aimed at preserving and promoting one of Liberia’s most significant historical and cultural landmarks.
According to a statement from the Embassy of Liberia in Washington, DC, the delegation was led by Ms. Alison Grunder, a former senior United States diplomat who served in Liberia as Chargé d’Affaires from 2018 to 2021 and Ms. Allison James, the Memorialization Project Director at James Madison’s Montpelier, a historic preservation institution in the United States.
During the meeting, the delegation presented its vision for supporting the preservation of Providence Island and enhancing public appreciation of its importance to Liberia’s history and national identity.
President Boakai welcomed the initiative and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting Liberia’s cultural heritage. He emphasized that the preservation of Providence Island could strengthen historical education, promote sustainable tourism and create opportunities for communities associated with the site.
The President encouraged continued collaboration with the appropriate Liberian institutions and stakeholders to advance a nationally coordinated and sustainable approach to the preservation and development of the island.
Providence Island occupies a special place in Liberia’s national history. Its preservation would ensure that future generations can better understand and appreciate the country’s heritage while strengthening its potential as a destination for cultural and historical tourism.
The meeting was attended by Ambassador Dr. Al-Hassan Conteh, Liberia’s Ambassador to the United States; Minister of State Without Portfolio Hadja Mamaka Bility; Director General of the Cabinet Nathaniel T. Kwabo; and Deputy Minister for Administration at the Ministry of State, Hon. Bill McGill Jones.
The engagement reflected a shared commitment to preserving Liberia’s historical landmarks and promoting Providence Island as an enduring symbol of national heritage, unity and pride.
