The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) has officially announced that it will celebrate its 62nd anniversary on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, in Monrovia. The event marks more than six decades of advocacy for the rights of journalists, freedom of expression and accountable governance across Liberia.
This year’s celebration is being observed under the theme, “62 Years On: Empowering Independent Media for Democracy, Accountability, and Sustainable Development.” The union’s leadership has announced a series of national events celebrating press freedom and democratic governance.
Parade, Panel And Council Report
According to a release signed by PUL President Julius Kanubah, the main event will commence with a grand parade through the streets of Monrovia, followed by an indoor program. The indoor session will feature motivational speeches and a high-level panel discussion exploring strategies to empower independent media as a catalyst for sustainable development and democratic accountability.
As part of the anniversary activities, the National Media Council of Liberia, the union’s self-regulatory arm, will present a comprehensive report. The report will detail investigated cases of ethical breaches, press freedom infringements and ongoing challenges facing free speech in Liberia.
The PUL also highlighted that this year’s anniversary coincides with renewed efforts to construct its national headquarters. The building is designed to serve as a permanent hub for press freedom, professional development and the protection of media workers.
Members Urged To Attend
Approximately 150 participants are expected to attend, bringing together a diverse cross-section of journalists, media practitioners, civil society representatives and journalism students. Stakeholders from government, the diplomatic corps and the private sector are also expected.
Ahead of the main event, the union will release its complete anniversary itinerary on Monday, September 28, 2026. The full program will reveal the lineup of motivational speakers and panelists drawn from the legal, governmental, diplomatic, media and international development finance sectors.
The PUL leadership has urged all journalists, communication practitioners and members of the public to join the celebration. The union emphasized that attendance is mandatory for PUL members wishing to maintain good standing.
Beyond its official purpose, the anniversary aims to foster professional networking, expert learning and solidarity among media professionals following months of intense news coverage across the country.
Commemorative T-shirts and caps are available at a minimal cost at the PUL headquarters on Warner Avenue, 9th Street, Sinkor, and are also being distributed to journalists nationwide.
