Monrovia, February 12, 2025: Sierra Leonean President Julius Maada Bio has spoken of sleepless nights regarding the growing regional threat to the peace and security of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

President Bio, delivering the 68th keynote address of the Armed Forces of Liberia (AFL) in Monrovia, urged Liberia to strengthen regional collaboration to combat and respond to this growing security threat to the region.

“Ladies and gentlemen, as we reflect on and celebrate the AFL’s achievements, we also acknowledge challenges ahead,” he said.

“The threat to peace and security in our region are evolving, ranging from transnational crimes and cyber threats to climate-related and economic disparities,” he outlined.

To address those challenges, the ex-military leader recommended that the region strengthen its civil-military relations, promote capacity building, enhance regional collaboration, and strengthen democratic institutions.

He urged that Liberians collectively celebrate the courage and sacrifice of the AFL and the fundamental integral role it played in consolidating peace, stability, and democracy in Liberia and West Africa.

“Like many of our nations, Liberia’s history has been shifted by challenges that tested institutions’ resilience and people’s will.”

“You have prevailed, and therefore, Liberia is still standing as a peaceful nation,” he noted.

Through all this, President Bio said one truth remains evident: sustainable peace and security can’t be achieved without the steadfast commitment of a professional and disciplined AFL.

He called for an army that served as the protector of national sovereignty and a pillar of democratic governance.

As they gathered to pay tribute to the AFL’s unwavering commitment to peace, security, and national development, President Bio reflected on his days in the military when they fought with courageous soldiers of Liberia in defense of life and property to bring lasting peace to the country and region.

The Sierra Leonean leader further indicated that he is happy that Liberia is finally peaceful.

“So, for me, today’s event brings back memories, reminding us of the huge task ahead of us.”

He further indicated that the Armed Forces have always played a central role in ensuring national and regional security.

Beyond the duty of protecting territorial integrity, he detailed that today’s military institutions are pivotal actors in fostering peace, responding to emergencies, supporting development initiatives, and strengthening democratic governance.

“Liberia and Sierra Leone share a history that underscores the importance of sustainable peace and security. The history that binds us in our commitment to a peaceful future,” said President Bio.
