SANNIQUELLIE – The National Elections Commission (NEC) has formally certificated Honorable Samuel G. Kogar as the Senator-elect of Nimba County, following his victory in the April 22, 2025, Senatorial By-election. The certification ceremony was held on Friday, May 2, at the Sanniquellie City Hall, marking the official conclusion of the electoral process.
The occasion was presided over by the NEC Board of Commissioners and drew a cross-section of guests, including representatives from political parties, civil society organizations, election observers, county authorities, and prominent citizens of Nimba County. The event underscored the importance of democratic continuity and the peaceful conduct of elections in the country.
In a brief but solemn presentation, NEC officials congratulated Hon. Kogar on his election and reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to upholding the credibility and integrity of Liberia’s electoral processes. They praised the people of Nimba County for their participation and urged the incoming senator to serve with transparency, accountability, and dedication to the county’s development.
Hon. Samuel G. Kogar now assumes the seat left vacant by the late Senator Prince Yormie Johnson, a longstanding political figure whose presence in the Liberian Senate spanned over a decade. Johnson’s passing earlier this year prompted the by-election, which Kogar won with a majority vote.
The newly certificated Senator expressed gratitude to the people of Nimba for entrusting him with their confidence. He pledged to carry out his legislative duties with commitment and emphasized that he would work in the spirit of unity and service to address the needs and aspirations of his constituents. He also acknowledged the legacy of his predecessor and called for collaborative efforts to move the county forward.
Kogar’s certification brings him into the upper chamber of the 55th National Legislature, where he is expected to play a vital role in national policy deliberations, particularly those affecting his native Nimba County. His entry into the Senate also signals a generational shift in the county’s political leadership.
Observers view Kogar’s ascension as a potentially stabilizing development in the political landscape of Nimba, a county known for its strategic importance and strong voter base. His political experience and existing legislative background are expected to give him an advantage as he joins the ranks of national lawmakers.
As Senator-elect, Kogar’s responsibilities will include advocating for legislative reform, supporting national reconciliation, and helping to stimulate development initiatives in Nimba. His certification also comes at a time when the Liberian Senate is facing mounting pressure to deliver on governance, transparency, and the equitable distribution of national resources.
The NEC emphasized that the successful conduct of the by-election reaffirms the strength of Liberia’s democratic institutions and the ability of citizens to freely choose their representatives. With the certification now complete, Kogar is poised to be officially sworn into office in the coming days.
