Senator Konneh Backs Supreme Court Ruling, Calls For National Reconciliation

MONROVIA – Senator Amara M. Konneh of Gbarpolu County has welcomed the recent Supreme Court decision affirming the leadership of the House of Representatives under Speaker J. Fonati Koffa, urging all Liberians to respect the ruling and prioritize national reconciliation.

In a statement released on Sunday, April 27, 2025, Senator Konneh described the Court’s decision as a “clarity” that fully settles the constitutional questions surrounding the House leadership dispute. He emphasized that the Supreme Court’s authority must be honored unconditionally if Liberia is to remain a functioning democracy.

“In every democracy, the Supreme Court is the final arbiter of justice. Its decisions are binding,” Konneh said. “Even if we personally or politically disagree with the outcome of a particular case, we have a civil and legal obligation to honor the Court’s ruling. We cannot and must not insinuate, whether through words or deeds, that we intend to disregard the ruling of the Court.”

Senator Konneh warned that any attempt to selectively implement judicial decisions would endanger the country’s stability and constitutional order. He stressed that the Court’s judgment had conclusively addressed the legal controversy and urged all parties to move forward in compliance with the ruling.

Beyond the courtroom victory, however, Konneh acknowledged that political and societal tensions persist. He called on Liberia’s civil society and religious organizations, particularly the Inter-Faith Religious Council, to intervene and help mediate the lingering divisions.

“Disagreement is natural in a democracy; disrespect for the law is not,” Konneh said, adding that all leaders must now act with restraint, responsibility, and patriotism. He reaffirmed his personal commitment to a democracy anchored on the rule of law, strong institutions, and national unity.

“Libera must always be bigger than any individual ambition or factional interest,” Senator Konneh concluded.
