Sharp Increase In MPox Infections …As Sixty-Nine Active Cases Reported

In the wake of the ongoing fight against the Monkeypox virus outbreak in Liberia and in the sub-region, the National Incident Management System (IMS), has confirmed additional new cases of the infections, taking the number of active cases to 69 in Liberia.

According to a release dated May 31, 2025, the testing results submitted by the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia bring to sixty-nine, the number of active cases and zero deaths.  The release stated that the Monkeypox virus causes the disease, which is transmitted from animals to humans, and then spreads by person-to-person through contact and with characteristic symptoms that include large pus-filled rashes.

Biomolecular laboratory investigation using genomic sequencing in Liberia demonstrates the circulation of Monkeypox virus Clade IIa and Clade IIb.  According to the release, the strains are infectious and transmissible as observed in neighboring countries in the region, for which the NPHIL continues to heighten public health vigilance at all levels. The National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL) hereby pronounces the following public health advisory aimed at preventing community transmission as well as cross-border transfer, given the volume of travel within the region.

NPHIL has advised the public to avoid close contact with persons showing symptoms such as rashes, wash or sanitize hands regularly, practice safe sex, report any suspected case of infection, and seek medical attention if they develop rashes. NPHIL encouraged entities and organizations to reduce large gatherings, while businesses, offices, schools, and places of worship are advised to make available hand-washing systems and avoid over-crowdedness in vehicles.

“NPHIL, MOH, other agencies of government, and supporting partners are working collaboratively within the Mpox IMS to continuously strengthen Liberia’s response,” the release stated.  NPHIL said, given its experience with previous outbreaks, they are coordinating with public health authorities of neighboring countries, and the public is advised to remain calm as the Government of Liberia is committed to safeguarding public health.
