Sup Demand Action From President Maparyan Over Campus Crisis

MONROVIA – The Vanguard Student Unification Party (SUP) of the University of Liberia on Friday, September 5, 2025, held an urgent meeting with Speaker of the House of Representatives Richard Nagbe Koon, University of Liberia President Dr. Layli Maparyan, and members of the House, demanding swift action on what they described as a deepening crisis affecting the academic progress and welfare of students.

The meeting, convened in response to calls from veterans, concerned stakeholders, and student representatives, sought to address issues that have sparked growing protests across UL campuses. Under the leadership of Chairman Sylvester Wheeler, SUP presented a series of non-negotiable demands, insisting that the survival of Liberia’s oldest university depends on bold corrective measures.

Chief among the grievances was the decision by the UL administration to classify Vacation School as a full semester, a move students say is inconsistent and unfair. “We demand the immediate reconsideration of the decision to designate Vacation School as a full semester. This policy is a complete contradiction and we are clear that the upcoming semester be recognized as the second semester,” SUP declared.

The party also pushed for the resolution of long-standing registration failures, including the Add and Drop process, which they say has left many students’ grades unrecorded. They further demanded the availability of buses for students commuting to the Fendall campus, along with urgent improvements in basic campus facilities such as bathrooms and seating.

SUP’s demands did not end with student concerns but extended to the governance of the university itself. The student movement called for an independent probe into what they described as the “illegal dismissals” of UL employees, the release of reports that led to those suspensions, and reforms in employment practices to ensure fairness. They also urged the empowerment of the UL police to provide safety and security across campuses.

In a statement, SUP emphasized its uncompromising stance “The Revolutionary Student Unification Party will always place the interests of students at the forefront of its progressive endeavors. Anything that affects the students automatically affects SUP. While we acknowledge the willingness of dialogue, we want to categorically emphasize that concrete actions and measurable outcomes are what we seek. Anything short of that will leave us with no option but to intensify our call for President Maparyan’s resignation and escalate our actions to ensure over 25 thousand students’ rights are respected.”
