MONROVIA – The Vanguard Student Unification Party (SUP) has issued an ultimatum to the University of Liberia administration, calling for mass protests beginning Monday, September 15, 2025, to demand the immediate resignation or dismissal of President Dr. Layli Maparyan.
In a statement released Thursday, September 11, SUP accused Dr. Maparyan of corruption, incompetence, and blatant disregard for student welfare. The party claims that despite urgent meetings with House Speaker Fonati Koffa and members of the House of Representatives, the UL administration has chosen to reopen the school without addressing the pressing concerns of more than 25,000 students. SUP described this decision as a “display of arrogance, pomposity, and a complete disregard for academic integrity.”
Under the leadership of Chairman Sylvester Wheeler, SUP outlined a list of grievances, including the reversal of the decision to treat vacation school as a full semester, immediate resolution of add-and-drop issues, timely grade uploads to the university portal, and provision of transportation to students commuting to Fendall campus. The group also demanded functional campus facilities, protection against unlawful employee dismissals, transparent hiring practices, strengthened campus security, and the reconstitution of the Board of Trustees.
Secretary-General Odecious Mulbah, speaking on behalf of the 33rd Politburo and Central Committee of SUP, warned that “dialogue without action is meaningless and useless” and urged students to mobilize on campuses nationwide to press their demands. The group vowed that protests would be “mass and unrelenting” until Dr. Maparyan steps down.
SUP’s call for action underscores rising tensions at Liberia’s premier higher education institution, where students have increasingly voiced frustrations over administrative inefficiency, poor campus infrastructure, and perceived mismanagement. The party framed its campaign as a fight for students’ rights and academic fairness, signaling a potential escalation of unrest if the administration does not respond.
At the time of publication, Dr. Maparyan and the University of Liberia administration had not issued a response to SUP’s demands. Observers now await developments as students prepare to take to the streets in what promises to be a decisive confrontation over the future of the university’s leadership.
