Tensions are running high in the Wein Town Cook Spoon Hill Community after a violent confrontation between suspected drug dealers and a police officer, raising fresh concerns about officer safety and the growing threat of narcotics in local communities.
According to reports, Officer Will Saye of the Liberia National Police (LNP) recently noticed that drugs were being distributed near his residence. Acting on his observation, he alerted the Liberia Drug Enforcement Agency (LDEA), which led to the arrest of one suspect and the seizure of a large quantity of nicotine-based substances. However, three others reportedly escaped the raid.
The escapees allegedly fled to the Wein Town graveyard, where they mobilized a group of drug users and attempted to retaliate against Officer Saye. During the confrontation, the suspects tried to seize his weapon. In the struggle, the firearm discharged, leaving one of the attackers wounded.
The suspects reportedly managed to escape with the officer’s police uniform and the magazine of his weapon. The wounded suspect was later taken to the John F. Kennedy Medical Center, where police operatives codenamed Rescue 2 arrested the stolen uniform. Authorities confirmed that the uniform has since been turned over to the Professional Standards Division (PSD) of the LNP for investigation.
Community members and colleagues of Officer Saye are now appealing to the Inspector General of Police to ensure his safety and welfare, noting that the officer has been disarmed and is at risk of further attacks from drug dealers. Concerns have also been raised over reports that both the arrested suspect and the wounded dealer have been released from custody.
Residents are calling on the police leadership to act swiftly to prevent further escalation, warning that such incidents undermine public confidence in law enforcement and embolden criminal gangs in the fight against drugs.
