Ganta, Nimba County — The Ministry of Transport has officially broken ground for a new county office in Ganta City, Nimba County as part of a nationwide decentralization drive to take government services closer to Liberians.
The colorful ceremony brought together national and county officials, local leaders and residents to witness the start of the construction for the Ministry’s Nimba County Office.
The project is one in a series of county and regional offices planned to improve access to transport services and administration outside Monrovia.
Archibald S. Abban, Deputy Minister for Administration and Insurance at the Ministry of Transport, told reporters the ceremony marks progress in the government’s decentralization program.
“We are committed to taking services to the people,” Deputy Minister Abban said. “This new office in Ganta will make it easier for residents of Nimba and neighboring areas to access transport licensing, vehicle registration and other essential services without travelling long distances.”
Ongoing county and regional office projects named by the Ministry include:
- Bomi County — Klay
- Nimba County — Ganta (current project)
- Maryland County — Pleebo
- Lofa County — Vonjama
Deputy Minister Abban pledged continued support from the Ministry during construction and after the office becomes operational.
He added that the decentralization effort aims to strengthen local administration, reduce congestion at the capital’s offices and improve transparency and efficiency in service delivery.
Local reactions and expected benefits
Local officials at the ceremony expressed optimism that the Ganta’s Office will spur administrative efficiency and local development.
A county representative said residents will save time and money previously spent travelling to Monrovia for transport services. Traders, drivers and transport unions in the region are expected to benefit from faster processing of permits and clearer regulatory oversight.
Project scope and timeline
Ministry officials said the new facility will include offices for licensing and insurance administration, a public reception area, records storage and parking for service vehicles.
Construction timelines, funding sources and the contractor’s name were not disclosed at the ceremony. Officials said those details would be released as the project moves forward.
Decentralization context
The Ministry’s decentralization program is part of a broader government initiative to expand public services to counties across Liberia. By establishing county-based transport offices, the government seeks to reduce bottlenecks in Monrovia and ensure equitable access to public services.
Looking ahead
Deputy Minister Abban encouraged community cooperation with the project and called on partner agencies and local authorities to support timely completion.
“With the support of county stakeholders and the public, this office will be an important step toward bringing government closer to citizens,” he intimated.
Residents, who attended the groundbreaking, including drivers and local business owners, described the event as a hopeful sign for improved services and local job opportunities during construction and once the office opens.
