Twelve Senators Ignore Asset Declaration Mandate

The head of the Office of Ombudsmen, Cllr. Finley Kangar, has announced that twelve senators from the 55th Legislature have failed to declare their assets.  Speaking at the Ministry of Information’s regular press briefing on Thursday, July 31, 2025, Kangar disclosed that the names of the delinquent senators have been submitted to the Pro Tempore for appropriate action.

The non-compliant senators include: Alex Tyler, Simeon Taylor, Botoe Kanneh, Jonathan Boye, Charles Sogbie, Wellington Geevon Smith, Numene Bartekwa and James Biney. Deceased former Senator Daniel Naatehn was also mentioned among the non-compliant lawmakers

“We urge the Legislature to comply with and enforce these provisions, as mandated by Section 4.1 of the Code of Conduct, which requires all officials to adhere to the laws, regulations, and norms of the Republic of Liberia,” he added.

In a related matter, at least 29 members of the House of Representatives have also failed to declare their assets. Cllr. Kangar stated that the Office has formally contacted the Speaker of the House, recommending that these lawmakers be suspended without pay until they comply. However, he did not disclose the names of the representatives involved.

According to Kangar, following the Presidential Moratorium requiring all Executive Branch officials to declare their assets within a specific timeframe, over 1,150 officials in this branch have complied. However, 150 officials have yet to meet this requirement, and the Office of the Ombudsman has recommended to the President that they be suspended.

He mentioned that the Judicial Branch has largely complied, with the exception of four justices: Cllr. Francis S. Korkpor Sr., Retired Chief Justice; Associate Justice Sie-A-Nyene Yuoh; Associate Justice Yarmie Gbeisay; and others. “We have written to the Chief Justice to ensure these justices comply.
