GRAND BASSA COUNTY – The Liberia National Police (LNP) Detachment in Grand Bassa has arrested two suspects in connection with the killing of commercial motorcyclist Reuben Samuel, who was murdered on Saturday night, August 23, 2025, in the Township of Harlandsville, Buchanan.
The suspects, identified as 19-year-old Matthew Whea and 22-year-old Prince Sumo, are both residents of Monrovia but reportedly traveled to Buchanan where they allegedly committed the crime. Police say the two were apprehended with a black Boxer motorbike carrying the same serial number that the victim’s family had provided during the investigation.
Othello Samuel, a brother of the deceased, is also being questioned by police in relation to the incident. Authorities have not disclosed his level of involvement but confirmed that he remains under investigation.
The gruesome killing of Reuben Samuel has sparked shock and grief in the county. In a statement, the Grand Bassa County Administration described the incident as “urgently concerning” and a threat to both community security and public confidence. “This gruesome killing does not only undermine his family’s hope and vision, but also instills fear in our citizens,” the statement read.
Superintendent Karyou Johnson, who chairs the County Security Council, has mandated the joint security team to launch a full-scale investigation into what he called the “beclouded circumstance” surrounding the murder. He stressed that justice must be pursued in accordance with the rule of law.
Superintendent Johnson also appealed for calm among residents, particularly motorcyclists and the victim’s family, urging them to cooperate with investigators. “We want to reassure the people of Grand Bassa that this administration remains keenly focused on upholding law and order across the county,” he emphasized.
The suspects remain in police custody as the investigation continues.
