MONROVIA – U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Joseph E. Zadrozny on Monday, September 8, 2025, held a high-level meeting with Liberia’s Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Augustine Kpehe Ngafuan, to review progress in the country’s transition from aid dependence toward trade and investment.
According to a statement from the U.S. Embassy in Monrovia, the discussions centered on opportunities to expand cooperation in critical sectors, including mining, energy, technology, and agriculture. The embassy emphasized that the United States remains committed to supporting Liberia’s efforts to strengthen its economy by moving away from heavy reliance on donor aid.
During the meeting, Chargé Zadrozny underscored the continued importance of U.S. assistance to Liberia’s health sector, describing it as vital to the well-being of citizens across the nation. The embassy statement also confirmed that both officials welcomed the forthcoming visit of a Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) delegation, which will assess Liberia’s progress as part of a review for possible re-eligibility for a second compact.
The MCC compact, which previously funded major infrastructure and energy projects in Liberia, is viewed as a critical tool for advancing sustainable economic growth. Minister Ngafuan and Chargé Zadrozny expressed optimism that Liberia’s ongoing reforms could strengthen the case for renewed support.
The U.S. Embassy noted that the United States will continue to work closely with Liberia to explore new avenues for economic cooperation, while encouraging reforms that foster transparency, accountability, and private sector development.
Liberia’s first MCC compact, valued at US$257 million and implemented between 2016 and 2021, supported improvements in electricity access, road maintenance, and governance reforms. It played a pivotal role in upgrading the Mount Coffee Hydropower Plant and creating a more reliable energy supply. As Liberia pursues eligibility for a second compact, both governments are framing the review as an opportunity to deepen economic ties and build on earlier achievements.
