UL Board Reaffirms Ban on Student Politics, Orders Disciplinary Actions After Campus Violence | News

The Board of Trustees of the University of Liberia (UL) has reaffirmed its decision to suspend all student political activities on campus, citing recent outbreaks of violence and disruption to academic life.

The decision follows violent incidents on the Capitol Hill and Fendall campuses on September 1 and September 11, which saw clashes between students and security personnel, and interruptions of student orientation activities.

In a statement issued Friday, the Board directed the university administration to immediately suspend students involved in the disturbances, in line with the provisions of the Student Handbook, pending a full investigation. It also ordered the establishment of a Standing Disciplinary Committee to strengthen enforcement of campus rules.

Beyond disciplinary measures, the Board instructed the administration to conclude negotiations with the University of Liberia Faculty Association (ULFA), resume classes without delay, and begin urgent renovations of critical facilities, starting with campus bathrooms.

“The Board of Trustees is committed to maintaining a safe and conducive learning environment for all students and a hospitable working environment for all employees. We will not tolerate any form of violence or disruption that jeopardizes the academic and administrative activities of the University,” said Board Chairman Numene H.T. Bartekwa in the statement.

The suspension of student political activities was first announced in 2024 after repeated clashes among student groups. Friday’s directive confirms the Board’s intent to enforce that policy amid renewed unrest.
