Ul President Maparyan Faces Student Protest, Resignation Calls

By Socrates Smythe Saywon

MONROVIA – The Vanguard Student Unification Party (SUP), a campus-based political movement at the University of Liberia, has called for the immediate resignation or dismissal of Dr. Layli Maparyan, President of the state-run university, accusing her of incompetence, corruption, and mismanagement.

In a statement issued Saturday, August 30, 2025, and signed by SUP Secretary-General Odecious Mulbah and approved by Chairman Sylvester Wheeler, the student party declared that Dr. Maparyan’s seven months in office have been marked by what it described as “disgraceful stewardship.”

According to SUP, the University of Liberia has remained stagnant under Dr. Maparyan’s leadership, with no tangible improvements to address the longstanding challenges faced by students and faculty. “After more than seven months, she has failed to effect any concrete change on the campuses of the University of Liberia,” the statement noted.

The group accused Dr. Maparyan of presiding over worsening infrastructure conditions, including broken classrooms and bathrooms, lack of internet connectivity, and the absence of operational buses for students throughout the semester. “These failures reflect her incompetence and demand immediate resignation or dismissal,” SUP charged.

The student political party also criticized Dr. Maparyan’s handling of the academic calendar, particularly her decision to classify the vacation school as a full semester. SUP argued that the arrangement, which offered limited courses, was “an affront to the over 25,000 students of the University of Liberia and undermines their right to a proper education.”

Additionally, SUP condemned the administration’s chaotic management of the Add/Drop process, which has left students uncertain about their academic standing and graduation timelines. “Dr. Lyli Maparyan has failed the students,” the statement asserted.

The party further accused the university president of illegally dismissing and suspending staff members, including the dismissal of Vice President for Fiscal Affairs Isaac Gannet, allegedly without proper justification. SUP also raised concerns over her decision to appoint Lester Tenny as Gannet’s replacement, claiming that within two weeks, Tenny received undocumented retroactive payments totaling thousands of dollars.

SUP alleged that Dr. Maparyan has failed to raise funds for the university despite multiple international trips, instead relying on government support while drawing what the group described as “an extravagant monthly salary.” It also claimed that faculty members remain unpaid for months while her administration prioritizes payments to “corrupt allies.”

“Dr. Maparyan’s tenure is a catastrophe defined by neglect, deception, and corruption,” SUP declared. “Comrades and masses of the people, based on ‘Ma Problem’s’ failures to restore decent infrastructure, normalize the academic calendar, resolve Add/Drop issues, reinstate unjustly dismissed staff, and cease corrupt practices, the Vanguard Student Unification Party demands her immediate resignation to save the University of Liberia from further ruin.”

The University of Liberia administration has yet to formally respond to SUP’s latest demand.
