The Liberia Annual Conference here is demanding justice in attacks on its facilities in Nimba County by members of a break-away group called Global Methodist Church.
Monrovia, Liberia, June 2, 2025 – The Liberia Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church (LAC/UMC) strongly condemns recent attacks on the Ganta United Methodist Hospital and the administration building in Nimba County by members of the breakaway group called Global Methodist Church, demanding swift and impartial justice for those responsible.
The Ganta United Methodist Hospital, one of Liberia’s oldest and most respected faith-based medical institutions, has long served the people of Nimba County and surrounding regions with compassion, professionalism, and an unwavering commitment to quality healthcare. An attack on this facility is not just an attack on the United Methodist Church, but also on the very ideals of humanity, service, and peace.
“We are deeply troubled by the violence, threats to staff, and destruction of property that reportedly took place during the incident”, Methodist Bishop, Dr. Samuel Jerome Quire, laments.
He says these actions jeopardize the lives of patients, health workers, and United Methodists, and they undermine national efforts toward healing and development.
Meanwhile, the Liberia Annual Conference is calling on the Government of Liberia, through the Ministry of Justice and relevant security agencies, to launch a full-scale investigation into the matter and bring those perpetrators arrested to justice without fear or favor.
The Church wants community leaders and residents to denounce violence and foster peaceful coexistence.
It calls on all United Methodists to remain calm, prayerful, and united in their collective pursuit of peace, justice, and healing.
“We reaffirm our commitment to serving the people of Liberia in health, education, and spiritual growth — even in the face of adversity. We urge the government and the public to ensure the sanctity and protection of humanitarian and religious institutions across the nation.” Press Release
