MONROVIA – The Unity Party has officially disassociated itself from an unauthorized counter-protest reportedly planned by a group calling itself the “Council of Patriots for JNB-JKK.” In a press release issued Monday, July 14, 2025, and signed by Lansana Pawenneh Fofana, National Assistant Secretary General for Press, Publicity and Outreach, the party stated that it categorically distances itself from any so-called counter-protest or “Thanksgiving March” claiming to represent President Joseph Nyuma Boakai or the Unity Party without formal approval from the party’s leadership.
While reaffirming its commitment to upholding the constitutional rights of all Liberians, including the right to peaceful assembly and free expression, the Unity Party called on all protestors to prioritize national peace, order, and stability over political ego. The release emphasized that any public demonstration purportedly representing the Unity Party must be authorized through official channels.
The statement also highlighted achievements under the Unity Party government in less than two years, pointing to improvements in national security, stabilization of commodity prices, and enhanced road connectivity, especially in regions that were previously inaccessible during the rainy season. It noted ongoing efforts to combat corruption, boost international credibility, and create jobs through trade and foreign investment.
The Unity Party stressed the importance of avoiding provocations and acts that could incite violence. The statement made indirect references to some protest organizers who previously held leadership positions during periods marked by poor governance and national reputational damage but failed to take corrective action.
It reaffirmed the Boakai administration’s commitment to the ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development (AAID), prioritizing reforms in governance and the provision of social services.
The Unity Party concluded by calling on its supporters and members of the Rescue Mission to avoid participation in any protest, counter-protest, or thanksgiving march on July 17, 2025. The party also commended the national security apparatus for its professionalism and urged the Liberia National Police to maintain law and order while ensuring the right to peaceful assembly.
