Unity Party Youth Congress Calls For Prosecution In Capitol Building Arson Case

MONROVIA – The National Youth Congress of the governing Unity Party has strongly commended the Liberia National Police for what it describes as a professional and timely response to the December 2024 fire incident that severely damaged the Capitol Building. In a statement signed by Secretary General Evans Boima Tuku and released on Friday, June 6, 2025, the Youth Congress expressed full support for the charges brought against five lawmakers, who now face multiple criminal offenses including arson, criminal facilitation, and attempted murder.

The Youth Congress said the police’s actions demonstrate a clear commitment to enforcing the rule of law and ensuring accountability, especially when public safety is threatened. Among those charged is Representative Priscilla Cooper, whose alleged involvement, the statement notes, raises serious concerns about the conduct of elected officials. The Congress described such behavior as reckless and unacceptable, particularly for leaders who should be champions of peace and stability.

The Youth Congress called on the Ministry of Justice to carry out a thorough, transparent, and speedy legal process. If the evidence confirms Rep. Cooper’s role in the incident, the Unity Party youth leadership insisted that she must be held accountable in accordance with the law. They argue that justice in this matter will not only restore public confidence but also send a strong message against political violence.

Reaffirming its support for the Liberia National Police and other national security agencies, the Youth Congress urged all partisans and citizens to remain calm, respect the legal process, and uphold peace and democratic values during this critical period.
