MONROVIA – The Unity Party Alliance (UP-Alliance) has reaffirmed its full support for President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, while condemning what it described as dangerous threats of chaos by some elements of the opposition and expressing concern over what it views as judicial overreach by the Supreme Court.
In a statement released on Saturday, the UP-Alliance emphasized that while it respects the Supreme Court’s role as the final arbiter of justice, its recent ruling concerning the legislative impasse in the House of Representatives has worsened rather than resolved the crisis. The Alliance warned that improper enforcement of the Court’s decision risks paralyzing the government, destabilizing the Legislature, and threatening national peace.
Standing firmly with President Boakai, the UP-Alliance commended his leadership for upholding constitutional governance and the rule of law, especially at a time when the country’s democratic foundations face severe challenges. The statement praised President Boakai’s commitment to respecting Article 33 of the Constitution, which mandates that a simple majority constitutes a quorum for legislative business. According to the Alliance, this adherence ensures that the government continues to function in the interest of the Liberian people.
The UP-Alliance issued a strong rebuke against certain opposition figures who, during a public gathering on Friday, threatened disorder and the ungovernability of the state should the President fail to enforce the Supreme Court’s ruling. Calling these actions a “morally bankrupt” attempt to subvert the nation’s progress for selfish political gain, the Alliance warned that any move to incite violence will be met with resistance from peace-loving Liberians determined to protect the country’s hard-earned stability.
In addressing the Supreme Court’s April 23 decision, the Alliance raised serious concerns about the Court’s acceptance of a Bill of Information filed by Representative J. Fonati Koffa, which it characterized as being based on extrajudicial statements rather than any enforceable legislative mandate. The UP-Alliance questioned how the government could be expected to enforce an opinion that, by the Court’s own admission, lacks the binding force of a formal judgment. They pointed out inconsistencies in the Court’s handling of the situation, particularly criticizing the Chief Justice for allegedly endorsing legislative actions when they suited the Judiciary’s budgetary interests, only to later question the legitimacy of the House leadership.
The Alliance cautioned that the ruling, if interpreted to invalidate major legislative actions, could unravel significant national achievements, including the passage of the 2025 National Budget, salary increases for civil servants and health workers, health and life insurance for police officers, and vital international loan agreements. Such a retroactive undoing, they warned, would gravely undermine Liberia’s governance and economic stability.
Reaffirming its commitment to peace, democracy, and the rule of law, the UP-Alliance urged all Liberians to reject divisive rhetoric and instead embrace calm, unity, and dialogue as means to resolve political differences. It reiterated its resolve to work with the duly constituted majority in the House of Representatives to ensure the uninterrupted functioning of government.
With a Petition for Re-Argument now pending before the Supreme Court, the UP-Alliance called on the justices to respect the doctrine of separation of powers by refraining from interfering in the internal affairs of the Legislature. They also urged the Court to recognize the principle of political questions in matters involving the operations of the legislative branch.
The Alliance, comprising twenty political parties including the Unity Party (UP), All Liberian Coalition Party (ALCOP), Economic Freedom Fighter of Liberia (EFFL), and the Liberia People’s Party (LPP), concluded its statement by rallying Liberians to support President Boakai’s leadership and to remain committed to building a peaceful, democratic, and prosperous Liberia.
“Under President Boakai’s leadership, we march onward, united, resilient, and unstoppable. Liberia will move forward. Liberia will work,” the statement declared.
