US$30M Corruption Claims ‘Trashed’ …Ex-Finance Minister Displays “Weighty Evidence”

Former Finance Minister Samuel Tweah has threatened to file an evidence-backed lawsuit against Spoon FM/TV owner Mr. Stanton Witherspoon for allegedly orchestrating baseless corruption allegations against him. Tweah has categorically denied any involvement in a US$30 million scandal related to COVID-19 funds, as claimed by Witherspoon. He is determined to restore his reputation through legal action.

At a Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) news conference in Monrovia on July 4, 2025, Tweah asserted that he had no role in the alleged mismanagement of the COVID-19 funds, which he stated were managed by the World Food Program (WFP).

Recently, in a live online show, Witherspoon claimed that the former Minister of Finance faced potential state arrest due to his supposed involvement in the $30 million scandal. In response, Tweah took a strong stance to refute these claims. Presenting various documents related to the funds in question, Tweah pointed out that the WFP received $25 million from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and an additional $5 million from the World Bank. He explained that out of the $30 million, the WFP spent $23.838 million, leaving $1.171 million to be returned to the government and $857,555 owed to the World Bank.

He alleged that the current government authorized the disbursement of the remaining funds for school feeding programs, challenging Witherspoon’s narrative.  “Enough of these malicious attacks! I will not be silenced or intimidated. We will fight back with every means at our disposal—intellectually, politically, and legally,” Tweah stated.

In conclusion, Tweah has warned he will initiate a comprehensive lawsuit against Witherspoon for defamation, aiming to protect his hard-earned reputation. Already, the former minister is facing corruption prosecution along with other ex-public officials for alleged economic crimes.

It can be recalled that Tweah, Nynati Tuan, former Acting Justice Minister/Solicitor General, D. Moses P. Cooper, former Controller Financial Intelligence Agency, Stanley S. Ford, former Director of Financial Intelligence Agency, and Jefferson Karmoh, former National Security Advisor to former President George Weah, were indicted for the August Term Of Court with the crimes of Economic Sabotage: (Fraud on the Internal Revenue of Liberia Misuse of public money, property, or record; Theft and/or illegal disbursement and expenditure of public money) Theft of Property, Money Laundering, Criminal Facilitation, and Criminal Conspiracy.
