Liberia’s Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung, has officially dedicated a state-of-the-art senior secondary school in Gompa City, Nimba County, calling it a transformative milestone in the government’s push for equitable, quality education across the country.

Representing President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, who was attending similar engagements in Bong County; Vice President Koung conveyed the President’s warm greetings and commendations to the people of Nimba and all those who made the project a reality.

“This is not just a building, it is a beacon of hope and opportunity,” Koung declared during the dedication ceremony. “With this school, we are taking a monumental step toward ensuring that our youth have access to the quality education they deserve.”

Constructed with funding from the World Bank through the International Development Association (IDA), the facility is part of a broader national investment of nearly US$47 million aimed at expanding Liberia’s education infrastructure.

The Gompa School alone cost US$1.6 million.

The Vice President paid special tribute to Mr. Francis Nya Manweahn, who donated the land, and praised the community’s active involvement in bringing the project to life.

Designed to accommodate about 1,000 students, the new senior secondary school boasts: 15 classrooms, two science laboratories, and a computer lab, a library, multipurpose classrooms, Offices, storerooms, and a general conference room, dedicated toilets for male, female, teachers, and inclusive students, sports facilities including a football field, basketball and volleyball courts, solar power, a borehole-drilled well, palaver huts, and a chain-link fence.

Koung emphasized that the institution aligns with the Boakai administration’s ARREST Agenda for Inclusive Development and Liberia’s Education Sector Plan, underscoring the school’s role in empowering girls and bridging learning gaps across the region.

“Education is the cornerstone of national development,” Koung stated. “We are not only building structures but investing in the future of Liberia.”

He also highlighted government efforts to strengthen teacher training, promote digital literacy, and modernize learning environments, noting that such interventions are critical for quality education outcomes.

Vice President Koung encouraged teachers and staff to see themselves as leaders and mentors. “Your passion will shape the future of these young minds,” he said. “To the students: make learning your priority. This school belongs to you.”

He extended appreciation to the Ministry of Education, led by Dr. Jarso Maley Jallah, for their leadership in executing the project, and to the World Bank for its continued support.

The dedication ended with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and expressions of hope that the school would become a model for academic excellence and community transformation across Liberia.
