Suakoko, Bong County, June 29, 2026 – Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung has urged graduates of Cuttington University to embrace innovation and entrepreneurship, encouraging them to become job creators rather than job seekers as Liberia works to strengthen its economy.
Koung made the call on Saturday, June 27, while delivering the keynote address at the university’s 64th Commencement Convocation.
Addressing the graduates, the Vice President said the country’s future depends on young people who are prepared to lead with integrity, solve problems, and create opportunities that contribute to national development.
He encouraged members of the Class of 2026 to view their education as a foundation for entrepreneurship and service, emphasizing that leadership is defined by responsibility rather than position.
Reflecting on his personal journey, Koung recounted rising from humble beginnings, including selling gasoline as a young man, to serving as president of his graduating class at Cuttington University before entering public service.
He said those early experiences shaped his leadership values and prepared him to serve first as Representative, then Senator for Nimba County, and now as Vice President of Liberia.
Koung told the graduates that success requires perseverance, discipline, sacrifice, and strong character, even when hard work goes unrecognized.
Acknowledging that unemployment remains one of Liberia’s major economic challenges, he said the government continues to prioritize private sector growth to expand employment opportunities for young people.
He urged graduates to develop innovative business ideas and take advantage of entrepreneurship initiatives, stressing that a university degree should be used to create opportunities rather than simply seek employment.
The Vice President encouraged the graduates to move forward with confidence, purpose, integrity, and a strong sense of responsibility, expressing optimism that their contributions would help build a more prosperous Liberia.
During the ceremony, Cuttington University conferred on Vice President Koung an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters (LHD, Honoris Causa) in recognition of his public service and contributions to national development.
