‘Waste OF Public Money’…Gongloe Blasts Government

In the wake of a huge Liberian government delegation to Japan, the Liberia People’s Party (LPP) Political Leader, Tiawan S. Gongloe, says the decision by President Joseph Boakai to lead such a high number of his officials is a misstep for the country and an act of wasteful spending.

“I support international engagements that are strategic, lawful, and frugal. I oppose waste, wherever in any form, shape or manner. Wasteful spending on high salaries and benefits, as well as foreign trips, whether or not budgeted, is a form of legalized theft,” Cllr. Gongloe added.

In a statement dated August 18, 2025, Cllr. Gongloe indicated that it makes no sense for a minister, deputy minister and assistant ministers to travel from the same ministry, or for subject matter advisors to travel with ministers with statutory responsibilities for the same subject matters.

“Let me be clear. I support the mission, but oppose the apparent extravagance,” he added. The Liberian People Party (LPP) political leader explained that Liberia is a poor country with deplorable healthcare and educational systems as well as poor infrastructure and high food insecurity.

He frowned, “We cannot afford jumbo entourages. Our people are demanding medicine in hospitals, desks for schools, and clean water in communities. Every dollar must work for the people.” However, the LPP political leader called on the Executive Mansion to always publish the facts and release the full delegate list, stating who is funding what, and the purpose of each official.

“We can represent Liberia with pride and prudence at the same time. Our message to the people of Liberia and the world at all times should be that the Liberian Government is serious: serious about investment, serious about reform, and serious about protecting taxpayers’ money,” he stressed. Gongloe added that modesty stimulates public trust and international sympathy and support.
