Weah Unity Push Splits NPP

CONGO TOWN, Liberia, September 10, 2026 — The National Patriotic Party (NPP) has suspended three senior partisans for allegedly using the party’s official letterhead to endorse an opposition unity initiative led by former President George Manneh Weah, exposing internal disagreement over the party’s involvement in efforts to forge broader opposition cooperation ahead of the 2029 elections.

The suspended partisans, Emmanuel Goll, Neileh Daitouah and Daoda Nesco, allegedly used the NPP’s official letterhead to issue a statement endorsing the opposition roundtable convened by Weah on September 6.

The action prompted the NPP Executive Committee, headed by Chairman George Mulbah, to suspend the three, as the party moves to assert control over its official position on the emerging opposition collaboration.

The suspensions come amid renewed efforts by opposition political parties to overcome longstanding divisions and explore greater cooperation ahead of the 2029 presidential and legislative elections.

Weah, political leader of the Congress for Democratic Change (CDC), convened the September 6 opposition roundtable at Jamaica Resort in Thinkers Village, Paynesville, bringing together leaders and representatives of several opposition parties.

The meeting focused on national issues, opposition solidarity and possible areas of political cooperation.

Participants stopped short of forming an electoral coalition or agreeing on a presidential candidate or ticket for 2029.

Instead, they agreed to establish a steering committee comprising two representatives from each participating party to develop a framework governing their cooperation and identify areas of common political interest.

The suspension of the three NPP partisans highlights emerging differences within the opposition over participation in the initiative and the nature and structure of any future collaboration.

Meanwhile, NPP Chairman Mulbah has praised the Joseph Boakai administration for what he described as its aggressive approach to combating illicit drugs in Liberia.

Addressing a news conference Wednesday, September 9, Mulbah said efforts to combat illicit drugs predated the current administration, noting that previous governments, including those of former Presidents Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and George Weah, had also taken steps to address the problem.

He, however, said the Boakai administration had adopted a more aggressive approach and expressed hope that the campaign would be sustained.

“If the government maintains its current approach, Liberia’s environment and future generations will be better protected from the effects of illicit drugs,” Mulbah said.

The NPP chairman also raised concerns about a vessel he identified as “Ship Atlantic,” which he alleged had been used as a conduit for transporting illicit drugs into Liberia.

Mulbah referred to reports that the vessel had been seized in Côte d’Ivoire and subsequently turned over to Liberian authorities, and called on the government to provide details surrounding the vessel and its reported transfer to Liberia.

He urged authorities to disclose what they know about the vessel’s alleged connection to drug trafficking and the circumstances under which it came into Liberian custody.

Mulbah said greater transparency would help the public understand the government’s ongoing anti-drug campaign and efforts to hold individuals or entities involved in illicit trafficking accountable.
