World Bank Calls for Sustainable Financing of Liberia’s Social Protection

The World Bank Group has commended Liberia for completing its National Social Protection Policy and Strategy 2026–2030, describing the new framework as a major step toward building a more inclusive, resilient and shock-responsive social protection system capable of serving Liberians across the lifecycle.

In a statement, the World Bank noted that the policy and strategy outline a comprehensive approach to expand coverage to vulnerable populations, strengthen coordination among institutions, and improve program design and delivery.

The Bank emphasized the importance of sustainable financing to ensure the long-term viability of social protection programs, urging the Government of Liberia to explore diversified funding sources and improve public financial management to support implementation.

According to the statement, the World Bank stands ready to support Liberia through technical assistance, capacity building, and potential financing options to help operationalize the policy and strengthen the country’s social safety nets.

The National Social Protection Policy and Strategy 2026–2030 aims to address poverty and vulnerability by integrating programs such as cash transfers, social insurance, labor market interventions, and social services, while enhancing systems for targeting, monitoring, and evaluation.

Stakeholders, including government agencies, development partners, and civil society, were involved in the development of the policy to ensure it reflects national priorities and global best practices.

The World Bank called on continued collaboration between the government and partners to mobilize resources, harmonize efforts, and scale up programs that protect the most vulnerable populations from economic and climate shocks.
