Germany Donates Vehicles to CHAP

By Lewis S. Teh

Monrovia, July 17, 2026. The Government of Germany, through the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development and Welthungerhilfe, has donated one vehicle and four motorcycles to the Community of Hope Agriculture Project to strengthen climate-resilient rice production in Liberia.

The donation was presented Tuesday at CHAP headquarters in Zubah Town, DuPort Road, Paynesville. The vehicles are expected to improve field operations and agricultural service delivery to farming communities within the project area.

Officials say the vehicles and motorcycles will increase staff mobility, improve project monitoring and supervision, and enable technical teams to deliver timely extension services to farmers in remote areas.

The support is also expected to accelerate the expansion of the System of Rice Intensification, a climate-smart approach that increases rice productivity while reducing water use and building climate resilience. Welthungerhilfe Country Director Hubert D. Charles said the donation reflects Germany’s ongoing commitment to sustainable agriculture and strengthening Liberia’s smallholder farmers.

The transportation assets will enable CHAP to broaden outreach, improve technical assistance, and ensure effective implementation of climate-resilient rice activities across project communities,” Charles told reporters.

Receiving the donation, CHAP Executive Director Bishop Robert S.M. Bimba thanked the German government, BMZ, and Welthungerhilfe for what he called a timely investment in CHAP’s operations. He reaffirmed CHAP’s commitment to working with farmers to expand climate-smart practices, boost rice production, improve livelihoods, and support Liberia’s food security.

Bimba said the Climate-Resilient Rice Production Project started from a BMZ call for proposals in March 2022. CHAP’s proposal passed a rigorous evaluation and was approved in August 2024 for implementation with Welthungerhilfe. Project impact:

The BMZ-funded project is working with 1,200 smallholder farmers in Grand Gedeh and Montserrado counties to cultivate 500 hectares of lowland farmland using integrated climate-smart systems.

The initiative promotes the combined production of rice, fish, and vegetables to help families diversify income, improve nutrition, and build climate resilience. Farmers also get technical training, extension services, and climate-resilient technologies to increase productivity and protect natural resources.

Founded in 2008, CHAP is one of Liberia’s leading agriculture organizations, operating in nine counties. It serves as Liberia’s focal group for the System of Rice Intensification and is a national leader in climate-resilient rice production. CHAP leads the “I Love Liberian Rice” campaign, Liberia’s first post-war dairy farming initiative, and is among the country’s certified seed companies.

The latest donation from Germany further strengthens CHAP’s capacity to expand climate-smart agriculture and support Liberia’s food security agenda.
