The Government of Liberia has broken ground for a US$250,000 Women’s Center in Gbarnga’s Far East Community to support women’s skills development and economic empowerment.
Speaking at the ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 5, Vice President Jeremiah Kpan Koung said the project fulfills a commitment made after women in the community requested a vocational training facility during President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s campaign visit. He urged the women to take ownership of the center and use it to improve their livelihoods while contributing to their families and community.
The project’s inclusion in the national budget was supported by Bong County Senator Prince Moye, who said the center will provide space for vocational training, empowerment programs, meetings, and other community activities.
The women welcomed the initiative, with representatives of Christian and Muslim communities expressing appreciation to the Government and describing the center as an important step toward creating more opportunities for women in the area. Funded through Liberia’s national budget, the Ministry of Gender and Children Protection is implementing the project. The construction is expected to be completed within one year.
